THEN/NOW Symposium

A symposium on public art, place-making, heritage and ecology on the 9th day of December 2016 occuring between 9.30am – 5pm at the Glasgow Sculpture Studios Gallery.

Contributors include: Matt Baker, ts Beall, Robbie Coleman, Minty Donald, Chris Fremantle, Nic Green, Dee Heddon, Jo Hodges, Lee Ivett, Graham Jeffrey and Carl Lavery.

How can public art engage productively and critically with:

—the ecology of a place and environmental change

—multiple and contradictory interpretations and uses of place

—social and cultural change

—ideas of time, ‘permanent’ and ‘temporary’ public art?

Who or what are the public(s) in public art?

Who or what are the authors of public art?

The symposium takes the public art project, THEN/NOW (www.then-now.org), as a stimulus to debate these questions in relation to public art practice and commissioning. It aims to bring together artists, curators, commissioners, heritage and environment professionals, planners, architects, thinkers and publics to ask, what can public art do?

THEN/NOW is a public art project made with/for the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow, 2014-16, and led by artists Minty Donald, Neil McGuire and Nick Millar. It was commissioned by Scottish Canals, Scottish Waterways Trust and Glasgow Sculpture Studios as part of the ‘Unlocking the Story of Glasgow’s Canals’ heritage interpretation project.

Tea, coffee and a light lunch will be provided.
